🛡️Safe ECTunnel Off-Site Trading Guide

See Redbot's post here
I apologize, I'm thinking about this the wrong way. Discussing or finalizing a deal off-site via email, SMS, Discord, Skype (rip), Whatsapp, Florp, Beeper, Fart, in-game, etc. has never stopped us from attempting to confirm fraud, and in fact it can be beneficial. I even encourage it in our Account Buyer's Guide,

We do catch what we can, so long as it's related to this site.

So yes, we will attempt to stop fraud both here and in our Discord channel. However, the more you discuss on the website, and the more you deal with website-linked users, the more we can protect.

This message has displayed in our discord every few days for years,

We kicked a guy a few years ago who was clearly scamming people and was in our discord channel. If someone's scamming from our discord let me know and I'll give them the boot if I can be convinced with evidence provided.

I could easily be talked into a rule that disallows discord handles, email, phone numbers, etc. in public threads.

As always, caveat emptor.

Off-Site Platforms People Use to Discuss Trades:
  • 💬 Discord
  • 📧 Email
  • 📞 SMS/Text
  • 🪦 Skype (RIP)
  • 📲 Whatsapp
  • 🐦 Pigeon
  • 🎮 In-Game Chat
  • 🛸 Florp, Beeper, Fart (and other... less conventional platforms)
Listen up: If something about a deal feels off, it probably is.
If you’re not 100% comfortable moving forward, either get that deal locked down on EC Tunnel or just walk away. Don’t risk it.

Important:
Admins can only investigate and take action if the person involved in the scam is tied to EC Tunnel - for example, they have a verified Discord handle on the official EC Tunnel Discord server or are an EC Tunnel community member.
If the scammer isn’t connected to EC Tunnel in some way, there’s unfortunately less we can do.

1. Don’t Get Played by These Common Scams
If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is; trust your gut! Watch out for these classic moves by scammers:
  • Payment kiting: “I’ll pay later, just send it now” don’t fall for it unless you like not having money.
  • Disappear after the trade: They vanish once they get what they want. This includes not responding to your messages. Don't get ghosted! 👻
  • Claim the deal never happened: Especially if it wasn’t confirmed on EC Tunnel. Nobody here is capable of performing Jedi mind tricks.
  • Delete or abandon accounts: They wipe their burner accounts to cover their tracks.
Heads-up: If you agree to any loans or advance payments, always set a strict repayment deadline. This is your best defense against payment kiting! Not paying back by the promised date is perfect grounds for a negative feedback!

2. Bottom Line on Off-Site Chatting
Discord, email, or whatever else you use to discuss deals isn’t inherently bad. Sometimes it can even help catch scammers.
But the more you do on-site with EC Tunnel users, the safer you are. If someone tied to EC Tunnel tries to scam you off-site, report it to the admins so they can investigate, stop the scammer, and protect others.

3. Already Been Burned? Here’s What To Do:
It happens. It's happened to me. Do you know how many times I've been left holding the bag over some asshole trying to screw me over? I'm here for a reason.
Have you ever heard of the Fitzgerald twins? They didn't get me (because they're losers!) but other people have successfully scammed me. Me!

Here’s your game plan:
  • Take screenshots of everything: Discord logs, EC Tunnel threads, payment proof, crypto transaction IDs, phone screenshots, polaroids
  • Censor personal info before posting. Do not post account names, passwords, character names, real human names, or any other information that is identifying. This list is not exhaustive.
  • File a report on EC Tunnel by sending a message to the administration team with the information that you have. The site owner/administrator is Redbot. Moderators are Teichou, Sic, and ChatWithThisName.
  • Reporting helps the admins investigate and keeps the community informed
  • Leave negative feedback. What better use is there of the feature if you've been scammed. Don't be afraid to speak up for yourself!
  • Open a public dispute thread - this is a valid place to share your experience with the community, discuss with other users, and warn others of a potential ongoing scam. A recent one i s the JuicyKR bitcoin scam that resulted in a ban.
Also, report scammers directly to Discord! It is against their terms of service to scam other users of the platform

Final Word
Discord and off-site chats aren’t the enemy - scammers, scams, and ignoring scams are. This community has to rely on each other to report bad actors!
If you get scammed, speak up. The admins can’t help if they don’t know.
If a deal gets sketchy, back off or move it to ECTunnel ASAP.
Stay sharp, protect yourself, and keep the community safe.

100% in agreement and it keeps everything secure for both parties and above board. The cleaner we keep the trading here as it's been to build this community the better. Nearly every person I've dealt with over the years has been honest forthright. But some people will take advantage of that, so it's good to have guidelines in place. Great write up excellent work as usual. Cheers!

We are in fact not going to participate in mediation for your personal off-site transactions that have nothing to do with EC Tunnel.

I 100% agree with this. But would ask, why do we/you allow traders to put their discord names in their trade threads. That seems to signal to a new buyer that it's not only ok but also within the rules.

If you're joining a well respected "safe" trade community and multiple sellers have the discord handles listed directly in their trade threads, that would make it seem like it's supported.

Other than this statement you made. I could only find 2 other semi-direct statement admonishing discord/offsite trades. I think for the overall health of the community we should just "ban" the allowance of discord tags anywhere on the site.

And potentially even update the safe trading FAQ to outright tell people NOT to do it.

I do not personally make the rules. I am new to assisting with moderation at EC Tunnel.

It's possible that technically falls under
  • Link to external sales sites or communities (including group-chats) in posts or conversations without admin approval.
But it is not a sale site, and a personal message isn't a community or group chat.

Users can use the discord name to contact the user in the EC Tunnel Discord. I imagine that's the intent of allowing it.

Due to some screenshots I've seen, I'd like to stress that I'm not endorsing anyone's loans or gofundme's or whatever through discord.

You can send me a DM here on ectunnel if you're not sure.

So far scamming via discord has been relatively rare, so I haven't seen a need to censor off-site usernames.

Nice write up Xuande.

"Kite Payments" is the big one here for me. Always get full payment at the time of sale or don't make the sale. I have made this mistake in the past and it never was worth the hassle.

One thing I do have an issue with is "Note: Admins will NOT intervene for scams that happened off‑site through any other medium." Is this confirmed? It feels very binary considering we have an official Discord server where users are verified via linking their account to this website. Some traders even have their discord handles at the top of their threads. If once you are off-site you are not protected, this shouldn't be tolerated.

If an account linked to this website engages in scamming users outside of EC Tunnel, they should be banned all the same. If not, what are we really trying to accomplish here?

PMs through discord aren't the same as discussion through ectunnel.

You can't add someone randomly to a Convo, you can't report a discord pm to mod/admin.

Rg can't restrict discord accounts (outside of the ectunnel discord.

They are 2 different things

Confirmed. I'm not policing anything off-site.

If you feel there should be a rule change in regards to discord handles appearing in messages, or ECT operating a discord channel, you're free to add it to suggestions.

Just so I am 100% on the same page here. If a trader directs someone to Discord via EC Tunnel PMs and then scams them there, nothing will be done?

Something would be done if it happened more than once: We'd make a rule to stop allowing discord handles.

This is a small community and so far everyone is playing nice with Discord. I don't want to dream up problems we don't have.

Dreaming up problems we don't currently have is probably the most important aspect of preventing those problems from arising in the first place.

I don't have to agree with everything though. Thanks for clarifying ❤️

Consider sending login details to your buyer over several mediums, such as conversation, email and text message. For example, send the username over ectunnel and the password to their Paypal email. If either party's account or email is compromised, hackers will only get partial details.

We do catch what we can, so long as it's related to this site.

Very happy to read this — it's pretty much how I interpreted things were done. Thank you for taking the time to lay it out.

First post updated with the latest information! Yay! If anybody has pointers on clarification or corrections, please share.

@Redbot, will you read through the updated version and propose any clarifications or edits?

The Safe Trading guide only shows up on the main EQ forum, not the subforums. Is this worthy of pinning, also, to ensure that people see it and it doesn't get lost to time? :)

I can add a section to the safe trading guide about off-site safety, I don't think we need an entire new thread on the topic.

Oh really, Hey guys, Trust the SAFE ECTUNNEL Safe guide! It will keep you safe!
Not like telling me about who he's trying to murder or anything, not like any of that right?

No ectunnel coverups or anything right

Did I type those words? Yep!
Are they out of context? Oh, absolutely.
Did you take that screenshot when it was 4 minutes old and my feedback was 951? Girl, yeah you did. You saved it in your little burn book. I hear you. I see you.

For more information, please see this helpful link where I provided some useful information that will keep users safe from engaging in problematic dick-sucking. 💖
